MORE SKILLS, MORE OPPORTUNITIES

Julia Pollak was already working as a defense industry policy researcher on Capitol Hill when she joined the U.S. Navy Reserves. She felt it wasn't fair to help set policy for service men and women if she didn't know what it was like to serve herself.

Pollak has found she has gained more than just insight from her experiences in the military. She's gained skills that have helped her in her civilian career, including her current job as labor economist for ZipRecruiter.

She sits down with editor-in-chief Ramona Schindleheim to discuss the unexpected rewards of serving her country.

A CONVERSATION WITH MAURICE WILSON

Troubled by unemployment, homelessness, and other issues sometimes associated with the military-to-civilian transition, Navy veteran Maurice Wilson took a military approach to the problems.

His 10-year-old REBOOT Workshop is modeled after the boot camps that integrate new service members into the military way of life.

In this Work in Progress podcast, Wilson explains how the post-service program he co-founded is helping veterans hone up on their personal and jobs skills, and prepare them for the civilian workforce.
